Christ Episcopal Church here in Sparta, NC is a unique place of worship. Sitting on top of a hill just south of town, its mission is to offer “A Home to All Sharing God’s Unconditional Love”. The sanctuary has clear windows that look out on the pastoral scenes of rural life set against the backdrop of the Blue Ridge Mountains. In 2015 we began a new ministry called Mountain Soul. Alleghany County is place filled with wonderful musically talented folks, only about 20 miles from southwest Virginia’s Crooked Road, which celebrates the heart and soul of Blue Grass Music. Guitar makers like Wayne Henderson populate these parts and it’s hard to throw a rock without hitting a musician! Mountain Soul seeks to make the most of this heritage by offering a once a month free concert set in the context of a short worship service. Singing, prayers, and a short homily open the concert venue which is held on the last Sunday evening of each month (April – December)
Already this year we have had two amazing concerts. In April The Faithful Four from Greensboro, NC and the McMillian Ministries Adult Choir from Galax, Va were at Mountain Soul. Both are gospel groups and with our windows and door wide open it was standing room only!
Last Sunday, May 28, Hank, Pattie and the Current played for Mountain Soul. Worship was led by our rector, The Rev. Stephanie Parker and the homily was provided by Mr. Jesse Williams, a member of Christ Church. The theme was Lighthearted and the worship was indeed lighthearted and lovely. Here’s a taste of the wonderful concert that followed:
Mountain Soul is a part of my journey that continues to enrich my life. Come and join us!!
